Mary-Ann Ooi Suan Kim
I am Mary-Ann Ooi Suan Kim, I live in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia and I am a Barrister and Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.
What are your stand out memories of studying at City?
I had many unforgettable memories! An embarrassing memory was during one of the civil advocacy classes which was recorded, where our tutor patiently but firmly pointed out to me that I was using too many hand gestures during my submissions. This was repeatedly told to me. I didn’t even realise that these gestures were not only distracting, but wholly unnecessary. Reality struck me when I watched a film of myself. We are never our own mirror! I cringed at how ridiculous I looked! Suffice to say, after much practice in front of a mirror I got rid of that habit. The rigorous Bar training at City prepared me for the realities of life at the Bar, with actual advocacy eventually in front of Judges. The embarrassing and somewhat painful experience was really worth it!
Where has the knowledge you gained at City taken you in your life and career?
In addition to the knowledge gained at City, the whole experience gave me wide exposure to greater international networks which is vital to my social and professional development.
